On the weekend of the 16th & 17th February 2013 we were delighted to be joined by the Besson Tuba Artist, Les Neish. The weekend began with a Youth Workshop and we had a fabulous turn out with students from B&L Youth, Newlands Youth, Kirkintilloch Youth, Gorbals Youth and a large contingent from the Whitburn Youth Band along with students from St Margarets Academy and James Young High. In all there were some 60 students and adults in attendance enjoying the tutoring on offer, ranging from breathing technique, posture, tone production, through to performance tips for soloists and ensemble players. By the end of the afternoon Les had all the students playing games to reinforce the messages he had spoken about during the session while also thinking about rhythm and sound quality. Everyone who attended left with a new sense of purpose and a massive boost of enthusiasm for brass playing.
In the evening, Les joined the senior B&L Band to perform as guest soloist in concert at St Andrew’s. In front of a generous audience, Les wowed everyone with performances of Hora Stacatto and Song for the Skies and also performed the duets Deep Inside the Sacred Temple and The Prayer with the band’s principal euphonium player, Stuart Gorringe. Les was a resounding success and performed stunningly. The band enjoyed the experience of accompanying such a fantastic soloist and hopefully together we've won over a few new audience members!
The weekend concluded with Les adjudicating the Band’s annual Solo and Ensemble contest for both the senior and youth band. Congratulations to Stuart Gorringe for reigning victorious in the Open and Slow Melody contest, to the Little Swiss Suite quartet for winning the Ensemble Class and also to Holly White for winning the Junior section. We were able to take a lot from the positive advice Les gave and it was an excellent way to conclude a fabulous weekend of music making.
The Broxburn and Livingston Band are most grateful to Besson and to Les for the tutoring offered over the weekend and also for the experience to work with such a star!
